How to develop a facial skin care routine
Facial skin care is important. After all, your face is probably the first thing people notice about you. It’s essential to take care of your face, but how do you know if you are taking care of it correctly? Here are the steps to follow to develop your own personal routine.
1. Determine your skin type. Wash your face and pat it dry with a towel. Wait one hour and then press tissue to your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. When you gently lift them away, examine the tissue pieces: Is it oily? Do you see flakes of skin? Naturally, if you see oily residue, you have oily skin in that area. If you see flaky residue, you have dry skin in that area. The result you see in one area may or may not be the same in another area.
2. Now that you know your skin type, you can develop a skin care routine. No matter what type of facial skin you have, your daily skin care routine should have three steps: cleansing, toning and moisturizing.
a. Cleansing removes dirt and excess oils to allow skin cells to renew themselves. For oily skin, use a lathering facial cleanser. For dry skin, use a non-lathering version. Follow the package directions and be sure to rinse off the cleanser completely.
b. Toning conditions the skin and tightens the pores. Toners also remove any residue from the cleaners you used. If you have oily skin, use astringent or a clarifying lotion, which has more alcohol. If you have dry or sensitive skin, use rose water or a toner that contains less alcohol. (Read the label to find the alcohol content and compare them with other products.) Alcohol feels wonderful on the skin when it is first applied but it can really dry it out.
c. Moisturizing, obviously, adds moisture to the skin and many products also add sun protection. Even if you are an acne-prone teenager, you should use a moisturizer every day to keep your skin looking its best. If you do have oily skin, use a water-based product that is oil-free.
Your daily skin care routine should only take about 15-20 minutes per day or less. Until it becomes a regular part of your routine, pencil it in your planner and check it off each time you do it. This will help you make it become a habit.
3. Another habit you need to develop is to apply a facial mask every week. There are masks designed for oily, dry and combination skins. For example, clay/mud masks are great for oily skin, while moisturizing masks can make dry skin look years younger. Masks can dramatically improve your face’s appearance. If you are very busy, you may find you enjoy the enforced downtime needed to let the mask do its work. (If you’re really busy, don’t worry, some masks only require 10 to 15 minutes.)
4. Lastly you may want to pamper your skin with a monthly facial, which provides deeper cleaning. Depending on the type of facial you get, it can also exfoliate (remove dead skin cells) and soften the skin. Most salons offer facials but there are also many home facial products that can save you time and money.
See? Facial skin care is not rocket science. You can easily develop a quick routine that you can incorporate into your active schedule. It won’t break the budget either. Take a minute to develop your facial skin care routine now.
