Anti-Aging Skin Cream – Can a Lotion Be Your Magic Potion?
We all want to stay young looking and so we all want to avoid wrinkles. The cosmetic counter has an endless supply of anti-aging skin creams. Do any of them really work?
The answer is “Yes, but – ” There are many anti-aging skin creams on the market in the billion-dollar cosmetics industry. However, there is no one product that will automatically give you the skin of an 18-year-old.
According to the Doctors Book of Home Remedies, published by Prevention Magazine, Retin-A is the only topical cream proven to reduce wrinkles. Retin A is a derivative of Vitamin A and is available only with a prescription. However, there are over-the-counter versions, known as retinol that can help less serious wrinkling.
When selecting a retinol product, keep in mind that the retinol concentration in less-than-prescription strength is only 1 percent. This is because retinol can irritate your skin. It is best if you start with a product with a small concentration until you see how it affects you.
While Retin-A is the only cream available that is proven to reduce wrinkles, you can help it along by using an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells. The best ones contain alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) or beta hydroxyl acid (BHA). However, these too can be irritating to your skin, so use them sparingly.
When choosing anti-aging products, you may have to test several brands before you find one that works for you. Everyone’s skin is unique. What works for your friend, or even your sibling, won’t necessarily work for you. Read several product reviews on the internet. Be sure to compare prices. The most expensive creams are not necessarily the most effective ones.
In addition to using these products, you must also use common-sense skin care techniques to prevent sagging and aging. Most importantly, you must eat right.
Eating a diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains prevents oxidation of your cells. Oxidation happens whenever oxygen interacts with a cell. While the process happens all the time and mostly without harm, some oxidized cells develop into free radicals which attack other cells and can eventually lead to cancer and other diseases as well as wrinkles. Fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods contain anti-oxidants to prevent free radicals from forming.
While you are concentrating on eating healthy foods, you must also avoid eating excess sugar, caffeine and alcohol. If you smoke, stop it as smoking has been proven to cause wrinkles. When you stop, your lungs will thank you too.
In addition to eating right, you should also get plenty of exercise and rest. This will help you relieve stress, improve your circulation and keep your skin supple.
When you clean your skin, use a cleanser suitable for your skin type and gently pat your skin dry, rather than rubbing it. Apply a moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
You should also avoid direct sunlight. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat when you go outside. You need to drink plenty of water, at least six to eight glasses a day.
By following these steps, along with using the right anti-aging skin cream regularly, you won’t necessarily get the skin of an 18-year-old. However, you will look and feel a lot better.
