Bare Minerals first began in a shop in California in 1976, and now uses the name Bare Escentuals. This line of makeup was created by cosmetic chemistry research and development specialist Diane Ranger. Ranger spent a great deal of time researching the history of makeup, following it back all the way to the days of Cleopatra. Some of her prior employers include Johnson & Johnson’s Nutrogena line and Proctor and Gamble’s cosmetics division Max Factor. Blodgett completed the program ìCosmetics Marketingî at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and has reinforced the company’s image among its customers by being approachable. Bare Escentuals boasts an enthusiastic and loyal customer base, with Internet forums that have almost 50,000 members.
Bare Escentuals is the top selling cosmetics company on television. A recent sales growth calculation showed an unheard-of 83% over sales during the previous year. This line of cosmetics appeals to women from every walk of life; business executives swear by it and earth-friendly vegan types are requesting vegan brushes by the dozens for their mineral cosmetics. Big name retailers such as Target are carrying the product line.
BE’s common stock is listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “BARE.” The last reported sale price of the common stock on June 7, 2007 was $38.22 per share.
Bare Escentuals works to make colors that go well with many different skin tones. To date, 375 eye colors alone have been released. Although the product is minerals, not all the colors can be considered earth tones. There are bright greens, purples, and blues.
