Skin Care Essentials for Mature Skin: Look Younger Today
There are a multitude of products labeled as skin care essentials. So how do you know which products are truly essential for looking younger? Here they are:
1. Water. As we age, skin becomes dryer and more prone to wrinkles. Drinking water provides the hydration you need to plump up your skin and look younger.
2. A healthy diet. Lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables are skin care essentials because they provide the nutrients your skin (and the rest of your body) needs to look and feel its best.
3. Exercise. Regular exercise, especially cardiovascular exercise, sends oxygen rushing to your skin cells, making them look more vibrant and therefore younger. Regular vigorous exercise also helps relieve stress, so you will be less likely to use other stress relievers, such as tobacco or alcohol, which damage skin.
4. Sleep. While you sleep, your body produces human growth hormone, which helps keep your skin thick and elastic, thus less prone to wrinkles. On the other hand, when you deny yourself sleep, your body produces the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol has been shown to break down skin cells.
5. Sunscreen. If you worshipped the sun in your teens, you probably regret it now because your skin is as dry and brown as leather. No matter what your age, always wear sunscreen when you go outdoors, to prevent any future damage.
6. Moisturizer. Use both a daytime and a nighttime moisturizer. The daytime version protects your skin from potentially drying environments while the nighttime version replenishes your skin while you sleep. There are many versions of these skin care essentials. The best ones have ingredients such as Vitamins A, C and E, aloe, alpha hydroxyl acids, glycolic acid and retinol.
7. Eye cream. The skin around the eyes is much more delicate than other portions of your face. It needs special treatment. Invest in a good quality eye cream and use it faithfully.
8. Exfoliator. A gentle exfoliator will remove the dead skin cells and toxins that make your skin look dull, lifeless and old. However, it is important to choose the right product because some products may be too harsh for mature skin.
9. Face masks. A weekly face mask lifts the skin, reduces wrinkles and is a great way to relax for a few minutes. There are many such masks available commercially or you can make your own. One easy one involves applying a beaten egg white to your face and leaving it there for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
10. Proper eyewear. If you need corrective lenses (that is, eyeglasses or contact lenses), wear them. Not only will you see properly, you will prevent the wrinkles caused by squinting. If you are fortunate enough to have good vision, you should still wear sunglasses in bright sunlight, for the same reason.
11. A good dermatologist. A qualified dermatologist will guide you to more advanced skin care essentials you may need and away from other remedies that could ultimately do more harm than good.
These 11 skin care essentials will go a long way to helping you look younger and healthier. Try them today and start getting compliments.

Can You Avoid Sagging Skin? Know the Causes
Can you avoid sagging skin? Well, maybe not completely. But you may be able to avoid a good percentage of droopy jowls and other signs of aging. The first step is to learn what causes sagging skin in the first place.
As you have probably guessed, gravity is a major cause of sagging skin as we get older. However, it’s helped along by the aging process. While our bodies naturally produce elastin and collagen, as we age, production of these two proteins slows down. Elastin and collagen are the proteins that make the skin flexible and youthful looking. As production slows, the skin lacks the support it once has and thus begins to sag.
Unfortunately, we don’t do any favors by the way we treat our skin during our youth. Remember all those days you spent sunbathing as a teen? While the tan you got as a result looked great at the time also broke down some of the elastin and collagen, actually causing you to look older before your time.
Also, if you’re a bit of a partier, you may also be helping yourself to look older. Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol both play a role in aging your skin cells, resulting in wrinkles and sagging.
Smoking causes wrinkling and skin sags three ways:
1.The more you purse your lips to take a puff (or squint your eyes because of cigarette smoke), the more wrinkles get set into your face.
2. The chemicals in cigarettes have been shown to damage elastin and collagen, according to the Mayo Clinic.
3. Nicotine narrows the blood vessels to the skin, so it gets less support from nutrients and oxygen.
Alcohol is particularly drying to skin and is also a diuretic, wicking away the moisture your skin needs to stay firm and young looking.
You probably already know that you need exercise to tone the muscles of your body. For example, if you don’t do those crunches, pretty soon you may develop a pot belly and love handles. By extension, then, you should realize your face also needs exercise to tone the muscles of your face and neck. This is especially important if you’ve lost a lot of weight because your skin may no longer have the elasticity to absorb that extra skin.
If you have sagging skin, what should you do?
First, exercise every day, especially those places where your skin tends to sag. There are many places online where you can find facial exercises. They are fun and easy to do, although you may feel very silly at first.
Second, moisturize twice daily. You really can look years younger by regularly applying moisturizers designed for your skin type.
Third, avoid alcohol and cigarettes.
Fourth, stay out of the sun. Wear sunscreen (or at least a good hat) when you need to be outdoors for extended periods.
Fifth, see a dermatologist. If your sagging skin really bothers you, your dermatologist can recommend products and procedures to reduce it or get rid of it. Anti-aging is a big topic in medical research, you may be surprised at what is available.
Sagging skin is part of life, but it doesn’t have to ruin it. Now that you know what causes sagging skin, do what you can to prevent and/or reduce yours.

How to develop a facial skin care routine
Facial skin care is important. After all, your face is probably the first thing people notice about you. It’s essential to take care of your face, but how do you know if you are taking care of it correctly? Here are the steps to follow to develop your own personal routine.
1. Determine your skin type. Wash your face and pat it dry with a towel. Wait one hour and then press tissue to your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. When you gently lift them away, examine the tissue pieces: Is it oily? Do you see flakes of skin? Naturally, if you see oily residue, you have oily skin in that area. If you see flaky residue, you have dry skin in that area. The result you see in one area may or may not be the same in another area.
2. Now that you know your skin type, you can develop a skin care routine. No matter what type of facial skin you have, your daily skin care routine should have three steps: cleansing, toning and moisturizing.
a. Cleansing removes dirt and excess oils to allow skin cells to renew themselves. For oily skin, use a lathering facial cleanser. For dry skin, use a non-lathering version. Follow the package directions and be sure to rinse off the cleanser completely.
b. Toning conditions the skin and tightens the pores. Toners also remove any residue from the cleaners you used. If you have oily skin, use astringent or a clarifying lotion, which has more alcohol. If you have dry or sensitive skin, use rose water or a toner that contains less alcohol. (Read the label to find the alcohol content and compare them with other products.) Alcohol feels wonderful on the skin when it is first applied but it can really dry it out.
c. Moisturizing, obviously, adds moisture to the skin and many products also add sun protection. Even if you are an acne-prone teenager, you should use a moisturizer every day to keep your skin looking its best. If you do have oily skin, use a water-based product that is oil-free.
Your daily skin care routine should only take about 15-20 minutes per day or less. Until it becomes a regular part of your routine, pencil it in your planner and check it off each time you do it. This will help you make it become a habit.
3. Another habit you need to develop is to apply a facial mask every week. There are masks designed for oily, dry and combination skins. For example, clay/mud masks are great for oily skin, while moisturizing masks can make dry skin look years younger. Masks can dramatically improve your face’s appearance. If you are very busy, you may find you enjoy the enforced downtime needed to let the mask do its work. (If you’re really busy, don’t worry, some masks only require 10 to 15 minutes.)
4. Lastly you may want to pamper your skin with a monthly facial, which provides deeper cleaning. Depending on the type of facial you get, it can also exfoliate (remove dead skin cells) and soften the skin. Most salons offer facials but there are also many home facial products that can save you time and money.
See? Facial skin care is not rocket science. You can easily develop a quick routine that you can incorporate into your active schedule. It won’t break the budget either. Take a minute to develop your facial skin care routine now.

How to manage dry and sensitive skin
Dry skin often makes people look old before their time. Dry and sensitive skin can also be uncomfortable. Here’s how to manage your dry skin.
First you need to recognize what dry skin is. Dry or sensitive skin can be flaky or peeling and feel rough to the touch. It is also more prone to wrinkles than other skin types and it may feel tight, especially when you wash it. In cold weather, it may become red and develop tiny cracks, which can be very painful.
Second, determine whether the dry skin is a new development and if so, what could be causing it. For example, dry skin is a common side effect of chemotherapy treatment. Or, if you have switched to a new laundry or dish detergent, your skin may be slightly allergic to it.
If the condition is caused by medication, ask your doctor if there are alternatives or specific measures to treat the dryness. If it is an allergic reaction, switch to another type of detergent, etc. There are many new products designed specifically for sensitive skin. Check the label for words like, fragrance free. Of course, there is always the possibility that your dry skin is simply part of the aging process.
Third, moisturize your skin daily. Always apply a moisturizer day and night. Depending on the product, you may use the same one at both times of day or you may use one specifically formulated for day or night use. In addition to your face, apply moisturizing lotions to your neck, hands, elbows, knees and feet ñ anywhere you see signs of dryness. This is especially true if you work in one of the health-care professions in which you must wash your hands frequently.
Fourth, drink plenty of water. The standard rule of drinking eight 8 oz glasses of water will go a long way toward moisturizing your skin. And note that we said water. Stay away from coffee and other caffeinated beverages as caffeine can be drying.
Fifth, avoid using soap on your face. Soap is notorious for drying the skin. Fortunately there are plenty of cleansers on the market made for dry, sensitive skin. Give them a try.
Sixth, dry your skin the right way. While it may feel good to rub yourself dry with a towel, this actually irritates your skin. Instead, slowly pat yourself dry. It may take longer, but your skin will thank you for it.
Seventh, protect your skin from the elements. You may think you’re too busy to throw on a hat or gloves in the winter time but exposure to the cold is a major contributor to dry skin. It only takes a moment to throw them on. Likewise, if you work with cleaning products, protect your skin with gloves, aprons and other clothing.
Eighth, don’t hesitate to see your doctor or dermatologist. These steps will go a long way toward nourishing and protecting your dry skin, but if it is still flaky, itchy, red etc., your doctor or dermatologist will help you get to the root of the problem. Dry skin can be beautiful skin with the proper care.
Skincare: The safest ways to use exfoliating products
Skincare exfoliators are an essential part of anyone’s beauty routine. Exfoliators slough off dry skin cells to reveal the younger looking skin below.
However, as many people know, it is easy to misuse exfoliating products and end up with red, raw skin, rather than the young and lovely skin promised in the ads. Here are the safest ways to use exfoliating products.
1. Most obviously, follow the directions on the package. Skincare companies, like all companies, want to avoid complaints and lawsuits from unhappy customers. That’s why they have legal experts carefully read over all the instructions to make sure they are clear to a ‘reasonable person.’ Read those instructions carefully, both in the store and while using the product. Be sure you understand each step thoroughly.
2. Read the label. If you know that you have sensitive skin and are sensitive to particular ingredients, don’t buy the product, no matter what it promises. While this is obvious, it is so easy to be tempted by the before-and-after pictures in the ads.
3. Unless the directions say otherwise, always use the exfoliator on wet skin. The additional moisture will make the product gentler on your face.
4. Again, unless the directions state otherwise, use the exfoliator after you’ve cleaned your skin. Remove all your cosmetics and the day’s dirt and oils so you won’t be grinding toxins into your face while you’re removing those dead skin cells.
5. Use the smallest amount of exfoliator possible, especially at first. The more product you use, the more likely it is that it will irritate your skin. Once you know that it is safe for your skin, gradually increase the amount you use.
6. Use the right product. In today’s tough economy, we all want to save a few pennies. But it’s not worth it to use a single exfoliator on both your face and your body. A body exfoliator will be too harsh on your more delicate facial skin and a facial exfoliator may not do an adequate job on the rest of your body.
7. Read product reviews before you buy. If you find an intriguing skincare product but you don’t know whether to believe its claims, try an internet search for the product ‘+ scam’. There are countless consumer review websites. If there is a problem with that particular product, chances are someone will have complained about it online, in no uncertain terms. (However, be aware that some unscrupulous companies will pay writers to create glowing ‘unbiased’ reviews.)
8. When using the exfoliator, use gentle circular motions that move slowly upward from your neck. Then when it is time to rinse it off, use warm water, never hot or cold to avoid damaging your skin. Pat your face or body dry with a towel, never rub it or risk damaging your skin.
Skincare exfoliating products make a big difference in your complexion — if you choose the correct, good-quality product for your needs and use it correctly.

Skin Creams: How to deal with redness and spots
Are you looking for a skin cream for your red, spotty skin? Then be careful, for not all skin care products serve the same purpose. There are many products available for many different conditions: oily, dry, combination. Here are some tips to help you.
Before you buy any skin cream, it is important to understand some basics. The most common cause for red, spotty skin is rosacea, a chronic condition in which your face becomes red and swollen, sometimes to the point of stinging. Sometimes you can even see the blood vessels in your face. Your nose may become very red and prominent and your eyes may also become red and watery. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for this condition but by visiting a dermatologist; you may learn some techniques to prevent flare-ups.
If you have rosacea, your dermatologist may give you an antibiotic skin cream like metronidazole or a cream containing Vitamin A to help control flare-ups. These can be very effective if you follow your dermatologist’s directions, not only about using the cream but also in avoiding stress, sun and trigger foods.
But what if you don’t have rosacea and you simply have red, dry skin in places? There are plenty of remedies you can use. Look for creams specifically made for sensitive skin or labeled hypoallergenic . These products will be less likely to contain alcohol, soap, scents, colors or preservatives that could make your skin even redder.
You should also take care to avoid retinoic acids, alpha hydroxyl acids and other products touted as anti-aging remedies. While we all want to avoid wrinkles, these remedies may be way too harsh for your already sensitive skin.
If you want to make your own skin cream, an easy one that will help sooth irritated, red skin involves simply mixing the contents of vitamin E capsules in pure almond oil. Add oatmeal to make it creamy and apply it to your red skin. You’ll be amazed at how well it works.
In addition to skin care products, you should also follow some common-sense tips toward treating your red, spotty skin:
1. If the problem appeared recently, consider any changes you have made to your diet and/or lifestyle. If you have tried a new medication or food, stop it. Some key triggers are alcoholic beverages and spicy foods.
2. Stay out of the sun and wear a sun block that prevents UVA and UVB rays from attacking your skin.
3. Use a cold compress or even a bag of frozen vegetables against the reddened areas to provide temporary relief.
4. Do what you can to reduce stress: get plenty of sleep; take a brisk walk to clear your head; pray, meditate and/or practice yoga.
5. Look for make-up that is blended specifically to correct reddened skin. These products will have a green base and can work wonders when used properly. Most department store cosmetic counters carry these products, though it may take some searching.
If these creams and tips don’t adequately address the problem, you probably should go back to your dermatologist, who will be able to give you additional tests and treatments. Lasers, injections and other treatments are available.
Finding the right skin cream is a matter of trial and error but it is not rocket science. Be patient and consistent and soon you will have soothing relief for your skin.
Clear Skin: Do you need expensive treatments?
Clear skin is the dream of every teenager, along with a hot date, a hot car and unlimited cash. Skin care companies know this and sell millions of dollars of products and treatments designed to prevent and treat acne. Many of these cost a lot of money. Do you really need expensive treatments to get clear skin?
The truth is you may if you have a really severe case of acne. However, before you see a dermatologist or buy an expensive acne treatment, try these steps:
1. Watch your diet. While there is some debate as to whether chocolate, chips and other junk food cause acne, they aren’t doing you any favors, either. On the other hand fruits and vegetables are wonderful for your skin, providing many vitamins and other nutrients. Reach for an apple instead of an apple turnover at snack time.
2. Drink plenty of water. We all know that water is great for helping you to lose weight, but remember that water is also great if you want clear skin ñ and for the same reason: it flushes toxins out of your body, including those that can lead to acne.
3. Get plenty of sleep. When you sleep, the body resets itself, producing hormones and other chemicals that help keep us healthy. A good night’s sleep can help you deal with stress, which produces other hormones and chemicals that are not good for your skin.
4. Don’t let anything touch your face. On windy days, it’s easy to have strands of hair whipping your cheeks. But your hair has oils on it that could damage your skin. Likewise, don’t rest your face on your hands either, for the same reason.
5. Be wise in the sun. The sun is a good source of Vitamin D, which is necessary for your good health. It is also good for drying up acne, thus leading to clear skin. However, use a small amount of a sunscreen made for oily skin every time you head out and wash it off when you’re back inside so it doesn’t clog your pores.
6. Choose your makeup wisely. Avoid using it at all, if possible, as anything on your face can clog your pores. If you must use it, wear only types made for oily or sensitive skin. Splash your face with cold water before applying it so as to close your pores and prevent acne. Be careful and remove it promptly.
7. Wash your face twice a day with a cleanser made for acne-prone skin. Use hot water so it will open your pores.
8. Never, ever squeeze a pimple, blackhead or whitehead as this will spread your acne and possibly lead to a skin infection. Apply any acne medication with a cotton ball or swab.
See? Most of these clear skin tips are simple and inexpensive. If these eight clear skin tips don’t work for you, then it is time to see a dermatologist. But chances are you won’t need to. If you take care of your body, it will reward you with clear, beautiful skin.

Skin Beauty: Three Simple Skincare Routines Which Save Time
Skin beauty seems like an expensive, time-consuming venture. Look in the skin care aisle at your local store you could swear that looking good will take a major chunk of your time. It doesn’t have to be that way. Here are three simple skin-care routines that will save you time and money.
1. Clean. Every day, dab some lemon or apple juice on your skin and carefully rinse it away with warm water. Pat dry. These juices (you can also use milk or vinegar) clean the top layer of your skin allowing natural oils to reach the surface. Thus, they clean oily skin and moisturize dry skin. (Just be careful around the eyes.) This step only takes a few seconds.
2. Tone. After removing all the dirt and oils, you need toner to bring the skin’s chemistry back to its normal Ph balance (i.e. not too oily, not too dry). There are many toners on the market made for specific skin types that can be excellent methods for soothing the skin after using potentially harsh cleansers. However, many people are perfectly satisfied with rinsing their face with cool water. Simply splash it on your face and pat dry: You’re good to go with no wasted effort.
3. Moisturize. Your skin needs moisture every day in order to stay young and healthy looking. Instead of buying fancy and expensive creams, all you need to do is apply a thin layer of extra virgin olive oil to your face every day and every night. Let it soak in and watch your skin beauty come out.
There! In just a few minutes, you’ve made your skin beautiful without a lot of masks, scrubs or facials. You didn’t need to inject foreign substances into your face to paralyze it or resort to any other extremes.
However, even with these easy steps, it can take a bit of time to establish a consistent routine. In order to get into the habit of using these time-saving skin beauty tips, you need to take just a few minutes to set yourself up for success.
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Buy the ingredients listed above along with some decorative bottles. When you get home, put a small amount of each ingredient in the bottles and store the bottles in your bathroom. This way you will use them consistently and won’t have to go running to the kitchen for your supplies.
2. Post a calendar in your bathroom and mark each day that you follow your cleansing/toning/moisturizing routine. No matter how tired or busy you feel, don’t let a day go buy without following these three skin beauty steps.
3. Mention your routine on a social networking site. It’s a great way to keep a resolution. You’ll feel as if you advertised your skin beauty routine and feel accountable if you don’t follow through. You may find yourself getting comments on how lovely your skin looks.
Skin beauty is a multi-billion dollar industry but thankfully, you can look your best without a lot of hassle.

Skin Creams: Choose the Right Cream for Your Skin Type
Skin creams are essential for keeping your face and hands looking their best. Here’s a guide for choosing the best cream for your skin type.
Dry: Does your skin feel tight after you wash it? Does it look flaky and feel dry to the touch, especially in winter? Then you need a skin cream that gently cleans and moisturizes your skin. Look for creams that contain aloe vera , shea butter or various essential oils to soothe your skin. Be vigilant and apply skin creams in the morning and at night. You will really see a difference.
Normal/combination skin: If you have normal or combination skin, you may have dry, flaky cheeks but an oily forehead, nose and chin. You need to choose the gentlest skin creams possible to provide moisture to your dry areas but without oil to create acne in your T-zone. Look for products that contain rose water, lavender or chamomile as they are very mild to the skin. Many people think they need to buy separate products for these two areas, but they are really not necessary. There are plenty of mild cleansers and moisturizers made for normal skin.
If you have dry or normal skin and are concerned about fighting wrinkles, look for a skin cream that contains pentapeptides, amino acids that help trigger skin cells to produce collagen. (Collagen is a protein that the body produces to make the skin more flexible).)These pentapeptides should be combined with fatty acids in order to soak into the deep layers of the skin.
Oily: Oily skin is prone to breakouts and blemishes. It often looks shiny, especially in hot weather or after strenuous exercise.
While it may be tempting to use a heavy skin cream to clean your skin, they can be too harsh and dry out your skin more than you’d like. You should also avoid creams that contain soap, alcohol or, of course, oil. Instead look for creams that contain yogurt or clay as these can gently treat your skin without using alcohol or petroleum.
No matter what your skin type is, you need to use a skin cream that has an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30 to prevent wrinkles.
Are expensive skin creams better than the over-the-counter products found at your local drug stores? In most cases, probably not. For the most part the extra money you spent goes toward packaging and advertising. However, you should keep in mind that for serious skin problems, you are likely to get better results from a prescription skin cream from your dermatologist than you will from an over-the-counter remedy.
It is also important to use your skin cream properly. Apply it right after you clean your face in order to trap the moisture in your skin. Store the skin cream in a cool, dry place so it will remain effective longer.
And lastly, the best skin cream for your type is the one you will use every day. If you don’t like the scent or the price, you won’t use it and you won’t get the promised results. By choosing wisely, you will get the best skin care cream for your skin type.

Skin Firming Facial Exercises
Skin Firming facial exercises are a secret weapon that can help you look younger. While we spend hundreds of dollars to keep the rest of our bodies in shape, we often forget that there are many easy ways to exercise the face as well.
The best skin firming exercise is a face and neck massage. You can do this virtually anytime, anywhere. Not only will your face look younger and firmer, you will also feel more relaxed. Use your fingers, your thumbs and even the palms to gently massage your face and neck in gentle, upward circles. If you apply coconut oil or a face cream to your fingers first, you can add moisture at the same time. Be careful around the eye area, which has very delicate skin: Work from the outer part of the eye toward the nose.
Here’s a fun exercise to firm the chin and neck: Open your mouth wide, as if you were going to take a huge bite of a sandwich. Inhale deeply and then exhale while looking up toward the ceiling. As you exhale, jut your lower jaw forward. (Yes, your face will look funny but just feel that lovely stretch in the chin and jaw. That’s helping you to prevent or get rid of that double chin).
Another good exercise for the neck is to make neck circles. Stand facing forward and then slowly turn your neck to the right so you are looking at the right wall. Slowly turn your head until you are looking down and then slowly turn your neck so you are looking at the left wall. Now slowly move your head until you are looking up at the ceiling and continue turning until you are once again looking to the right. Repeat but switch directions.
Yet another skin firming exercise for the neck involves tilting your head from side to side. Stand looking forward. Slowly tilt your head as if you are trying to touch your right ear to your right shoulder. Do not raise your shoulder. Hold the position briefly then raise your head to the starting position. Repeat on the left side.
There are some facial exercises you need to avoid in order to remain as wrinkle-free as possible. The moist important is to avoid squinting. Not only does squinting create and emphasize wrinkles around the eyes, it also may signal an eye problem.
Likewise, you should avoid pursing your lips. Did you know smoking does indeed cause wrinkles for just that reason? It’s another good reason to kick an unhealthy, expensive habit Also avoid frowning, which also creates and emphasizes wrinkles.
So what about smiling? While they are called smile lines for a reason; don’t even think of trying to eliminate smiles from your life. Everyone, no matter their age or how many wrinkles they have, automatically looks better with a smile.
Do skin firming exercises work? You bet they do. However, just like any other exercise program, you must do them consistently before you see any results. But you won’t see any results until you get started, so why not try some exercises now?
