Skin Care Daily: Seven simple steps to a healthy look

Skin care may seem to be a very complex task. There are a dizzying array of lotions and potions out there, each one promising to make your skin the best it can be. How do you know what is best?
Relax. Here are seven tips to make skin care easy.
1. Eat well. Eating a healthy diet, with plenty of fruits, vegetables and protein, is probably the best thing you can do to care for your skin. Keep away from sugar, salt and fats: Not only do they show in your waistline and on the scale, they also show in your skin, making it look pasty and dull. Also keep away from alcohol, which can discolor your skin, and smoking, which has been proven to cause wrinkles.
2. Drink plenty of water, at least six glasses each day. Water keeps your skin well hydrated, keeping it soft and supple. But stick with water or juice: caffeine can dehydrate your skin.
3. Stay out of the sun. While most of us like to have that bronze look, a sun tan is actually sign of skin damage, not health. If you must be out in the sun, wear a hat and sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) suitable for your age and skin type.
4. Exercise. Daily exercise not only keeps your weight down, it also boosts your circulation. In addition, the layer of muscle underneath your skin is more toned, giving your skin a healthier appearance. But don't overdo it: Your body, including your skin, needs eight hours of sleep in order to stay strong.
5. Take warm showers. If your shower is too hot, it will dry your skin. If it is too cold, it will shock your skin. When you are done, pat your skin dry with a towel. (Don't rub or else you will rub away some of your skin's oils.) Apply a lotion to seal in the moisture. (Use an oil-free lotion if your skin tends to be oily).
6. Use the right cleansing products for your skin type. If you have dry skin, use gentle cleansers created especially for dry skin and clean your skin no more than twice a day. Do not use soap. If you have oily skin, you can use soap or other products created for oily skin. Whether you have dry, oily or combination skin, keep in mind that you may have to experiment with skin care products to find ones that work best for you.
7. See a doctor regularly. While most cases of red, scaly skin, pimples or "age spots" are not cause for concern, your health-care professional may be able to determine if these are symptoms of a more serious problem. If over-the-counter remedies don't help within a reasonable amount of time, make an appointment.
By following these seven steps, you will go a long way toward having the healthy skin you have always wanted. Your skin is a reflection of your body's overall health. Healthy skin is the most important step to a more beautiful you.
